Private messages on Tik Tok: how to write and send

Private messages on Tik-Tok TikTok

TikTok is a mobile application developed by ByteDance to create, share and watch short thematic videos. The platform has many additional features built in, one of which is a messenger for messaging. The principle of its operation is very similar to Direct Instagram, however, due to the fact that this is not the main option of the application, not all users know how to write a message on TikTok and what useful features the chat has in this mobile application.

They are needed for active user interaction within the application. This feature is convenient because it allows you to exchange not only text SMS, but also videos posted on the platform. More details on how to share a video with a friend will be discussed below.

The button for opening the user’s private messages is located in the “Inbox” tab at the bottom of the main screen and looks like a paper airplane. After clicking on it, a list of active chats and a “+” icon will appear on the screen to create a new dialogue with the person whose account is subscribed to.

Note. You can only chat with users from the “Subscriptions” list, so in order to start a dialogue, you need to subscribe to the person of interest.Private messages on Tik-TokTik Tok messages

    Change settings

To change the settings regarding Private Messages, the user needs to access the application settings:

  • Open your profile by clicking on the Me tab at the bottom of the screen.
  • Go to the “Settings and privacy” menu by clicking on the icon in the form of three vertical dots in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select the “Privacy” / “Security” section.
  • Click on “Who can send you private messages” and select the option you want: Everyone, Friends (followed people), or Nobody.
  • On a note. Regardless of the option you choose, you will be able to receive SMS from users with whom you have previously had a dialogue.

    Messaging rules

As part of the Tik Tok security initiative, the developers have introduced new restrictions on the use of the private messaging feature. Now chat is available only from 16 years old, and account holders who have not yet reached this age will not be able to use this option.

How to write “in a personal”

There are at least three ways to start a conversation on TikTok:

  • Through the profile of the person to whom you want to send a message.
  • Through the “Personal Messages” section.
  • Through the share function.
  • Next, let’s look at how to use these methods to send a message to Tik Tok on Android and iOS (smartphones and tablets), as well as mobile OS emulators for computers.

    From an Android smartphone

To send SMS via user profile:

  • Open Tik Tok and go to the “Me” section.
  • Select the “Subscriptions” menu and go to the profile of the person of interest.
  • Click on the “Message” button and in the dialog box that appears, enter the text to send.
  • To implement the second method, the user will need to independently enter the chat menu (“Inbox” / “Personal messages”), open an existing dialogue or start a new one by clicking on the “+” on top and selecting a username from the list of profiles.

The “Share” function works in case of sending a video from TikTok to another user of the platform. Further it will be considered in more detail.

    From iPhone

The mentioned 3 ways to send SMS on Tik Tok are also relevant for owners of iOS smartphones. The main difference between the application interface on the iPhone is the availability of the “LAN” button from the main window, where recommended videos are played. But in general, the instructions are the same.

    Additional features

In “Private Messages”, users can send each other not only text SMS and links, but also emoji (sad, funny, gestures, etc.), stickers and GIFs. To do this, go to the dialog box and click on the smiley icon in the lower right corner of the screen.

By the way. Stickers and gifs are sent in separate SMS. Emoji can be sent separately or along with text.

Additionally, users can like their messages and SMS of their interlocutors.

    How to share a video

Sending a video you like on TikTok to a friend is quite simple:

  • While the video is playing, click on the arrow icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
  • Choose how you want to send and receive the video. This can be a TikTok user (then the sent video will appear in “Private messages”) or an account owner in another social network (a link to the video will be sent). If the video is sent to a Tik Tok user, the clip can be additionally signed before sending.
  • Click on the “Submit” button.
  • On a note. Almost any video can be downloaded to a mobile device. To do this, click on the corresponding menu button “Share”. There you can also create gifs from videos for further sending in a compressed format. How to share a video on TikTokHow to share a video on TikTok

    Deleting a message

To delete your message or SMS of the interlocutor:

  • Enter the dialogue through “Private Messages”.
  • Hold your finger on the desired SMS.
  • In the context menu that appears, select the “Delete” option.
  • Note. Tik Tok does not support the function of deleting a sent message from all participants in the dialogue at once.

Is it possible to recover a message after deletion

The functionality of TikTok does not include the function of creating a backup copy of the dialogue, therefore, it is impossible to restore SMS after deleting it. To save important information, we advise you to take screenshots of Tik Tok correspondence or copy individual messages to Notes.

    Why can’t send a message

There may be several reasons why a user cannot send SMS via chat:

  • No internet connection. In this case, it is enough to check if the phone is connected to Wi-Fi or a mobile network.
  • Inconsistency with the age limit (user under 16 years old). Only creating a new account with an older age will help here.
  • One of the interlocutors is blocked by another participant in the dialogue. Check your “Black List” of users or ask your interlocutor to unblock you through other social networks.
  • Users are not following each other. Subscribe to a person in order to write to him via PM.
  • Sometimes errors when sending SMS are associated with technical failures of the platform. Fortunately, they are quickly eliminated by the developers of TikTok.

TikTok private messages cannot be called a full-fledged messenger, because even half of the functions that modern mobile applications for online communication can boast of are not available in them. Perhaps in the future, new features will appear that will allow the platform for short videos to become a platform for full-fledged user interaction.

In the meantime, TikTok remains the best platform for creative guys and girls who, using transitions, masks and other effects, create funny and interesting videos (jokes, pranks, challenges, and others) that fall into trends.
